Unprepared

By now everyone has heard about the major power outage in Southern California. I understand that having no power for 12 hours is definitely not the end of the world but when you are taken off guard and completely unprepared it is a bigger ordeal than it needs to be. The whole city attempted to get home at the same time and all the lights were out, making for some lovely traffic. To make matters worse, it was about 95 degrees outside and yes, I found myself without gas AGAIN. Since you can’t pump gas without power and I wanted to make sure I got us home, we drove with all the windows down. Let me list all of the ways I was completely unprepared for a power outage:

1. 1. My gas tank was completely empty

2. 2. I didn’t charge my cell phone the night before so I had no bars of power.

3. 3. Not that it mattered because I could not access the wireless internet, but my laptop was also dead.

4. 4. We own 1 flashlight with dead batteries. I took apart 4 of Emmy’s toys to scrounge up some.

5. 5. I am not a candle person so the only candles I had were tea lights, about 10 of them. They only last about 3 hours.

No big deal, we survived, but lesson learned. I think the person who suffered the most from this inconvenient black-out was my brother. He was flying in from New York and was diverted to Long Beach and had to take a bus to San Diego! Now that sucks. By the way, he also had a dead cell phone so I am not the only unprepared one in the family!
